As they continued walking and talking, a chariot of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them, and Ehyah ascended in a whirlwind into heaven.

The prophets Elijah and Elisha were on a journey from Jericho to the River Jordan when a whirlwind took Elijah bodily up to heaven without experiencing death. There are two possible meteorological explanations of the whirlwind. It may have been a dust-whirl or a small tornado. Dust-whirls are very common in the hotter parts of the year in the Middle East, especially in desert areas. Alternatively, it could have been a small tornado associated with cumulonimbus cloud, which occurs mainly in winter.
