What is Life Coaching?

Do you ever feel dissatisfied with your life as you are leading it

, but have not the faintest idea of what you really want or how you would like to change it?

Do you feel that you are not really living up to your potential

, but have neither the wherewithal, or motivation to do anything about it?

Do you ever just want to talk over ideas, issues and problems with somebody authentic, who would accept, listen and reflect back any insights and thoughts in an unbiased manner? Enabling you to process your thoughts and take action?

Or maybe you know exactly where you want to go and need somebody to energise you and take you seriously?

Would you like more time and energy to do the things that you want to do?

Life Coaching

can help in all of these examples and more as it could give you the opportunity to look closely at different parts of your life, and get a sense of what really makes you tick. This enables you to set personal goals, which match who you really are, making then easier to attain. Which, of course, would help you to address the gap between the life you are leading now and the life you would like to lead in the future.

The Coach always starts from the perspective of the person being coached (the client) and provides an unbiased framework, which enables people to fully explore life options and solutions to problems. Coaching is not therapy, and a coach will often refer people who have to unravel any issues from the past. It is therefore very pragmatic, enabling the "Client" to look forward and move towards their goals on an almost daily basis.

The media

has said the following about Coaching: -

"We British are reluctant to tell all to the therapist, and think it far too grand to call in a business consultant when work is unsatisfying or problematic. Coaching is a happy medium, dealing with all areas of life, professional and personal - not just for people with problems but for those who want to do even better"

Independent on Sunday

"Coaching is a small voice saying, Are you really doing what you want to do? What have you done this week to accomplish your goals? It keeps you on track"

The Times

The Coaching process

is undertaken mainly on the telephone and via e-mail. The client telephones the coach three times a month and works on any goals and issues that emerge between the calls. An important part of the coaching process is the ability of the coach to make themselves available between calls so that they can support and help the client with any issues or queries as they arise.

Coaching can be used to move a person past a crisis or to lay more permanent life style foundations. A person can therefore choose to be coached for as long or as short a period as they want. Often people work with a coach for between 3 and 6 months.

The important thing about Coaching is that the Coach follows the clients agenda and is one hundred percent behind the client in an unbiased and non-judgemental way.

Who am I to coach you?

One of essential aspects of a personal coach is that they "Walk their talk" and have a secure personal foundation. As somebody who has realigned my lifestyle to match my goals, values, needs and personal standards, I know about this process in both myself and others. I can draw upon 13 years of professional life related to this field, working alongside communities, in international development, in education and in management, where I have always taken a coaching approach and have both formally and informally coached many many people.

I am continuously developing my skills and practice under the guidance of a personal coach myself, and belong to Coach University, which gives me access to an enormous range of materials, training and experience.

At present I am also an Associate lecturer for The Open University Business school and undertake free lance training in co-operative development and stress management.
