The Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff Railway
The Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff Railway is a Victorian water powered counter balance cliff lift, Designed by George Marks built by local man Bob Jones and financed by Publisher and local benefactor George Newnes.
Opened in 1890 it has provided a constant service even through both world wars and the Lynmouth flood disaster. It still services all the visitors to the twin villages today and in 2015 will reach its 125th anniversary.
This unique form of transport is a must when visiting Lynton & Lynmouth, the only one of its kind running on a total loss system requiring no other power what so ever, it is a totally environmentally friendly form of transport and has been for well over 100 years.
As it ascends the 1 in 1 3/4 (58%) 900 foot long track, on a clear day the views are breathtaking across the Bristol Channel to Wales and Lynmouth Bay to Countisbury where you can see some of Englands highest sea cliffs.
