We knew our flower displays and permanent planting were good from previous results so the only way we could impress our judges was by showing our care and concern for our lovely environment and our wish to conserve it and to improve it. Our conservation of water supplies has been perfected over the last five years. We have watered our putting greens from storage tanks in the East Lyn River for some time and so with the initiative of our council foreman Lyn in Bloom has been able to tap into this supply and now 75% of the Lynmouth arrangements are watered from the river.
The Cliff Railway which has become renowned for flower displays waters everything and powers the railway with water from the West Lyn River. With the help of our Exmoor Park ranger, volunteers and our council workforce we have endeavoured to manage the land owned by Lynton and Lynmouth Town Council within the guidelines for areas which are sites of special scientific interest.
This management, which is ongoing, has over the last few years started to regenerate the heather and wild flowers, the butterflies and wild life which were being kept away by the thick canopies of trees, gorse, bracken and brambles. This management has also provided our visitors with wonderful open areas and coastal views. To our great delight the judges were so impressed with everything they saw they awarded us a gold certificate and out of the 11 nominations only Scarborough and Lynton and Lynmouth were given this accolade.
