Lynton & Lynmouth in Bloom 2006

Middleham Gardens

About In Bloom 2005 Winners

This is our latest project and something we have waited patiently to work on for some 10 years.  In 1952 there were 10 cottages making up the hamlet of Middleham, all of which were completely destroyed by the flood in August that year with the loss of three lives.  For a time the gardens were kept as a memorial to those who died and to fund this square feet of the land was sold for 1.  In the last 25 years the gardens have been reclaimed by nature and due to the way the funds were raised it has been very difficult to acquire the right to work on the land.  After some five years of dogged determination the Lyn Community Development Trust has at last acquired the lease and appointed trustees to take care of the gardens.

One of the directors of the trust, with funding from the flood fund and money put aside by the LCDT has employed tree surgeons and other help to clear the area.  So many interesting features have been uncovered it has once again become an area to enjoy and also remember those who lived there.  We have worked with the trust and started to plan future planting having already made a start on a rockery which has been exposed.  Plans to provide information boards, benches and picnic tables are now on the funding list and The National Trust has provided some wonderful volunteers to help with clearance.  These volunteers are a small group of special needs adults from Kingsteignton.  They attend a day centre designed to engage and educate and, as the National Trust Ranger says are great fun to work with. The National Trust Ranger is planning to help provide a safe entrance in to the gardens.
